Laboratory Support Engineer - School of Engineering and Physics

Hours: Full-time, Salary; Position available beginning in August 2025

Job Description: The School of Engineering and Physics is seeking a full-time employee to support engineering laboratory instruction, maintain engineering laboratory equipment, and facilitate students’ safe and productive use of the maker space (machine, wood, and prototyping shops). The ideal candidate will have experience working in a machine shop with both manual and CNC equipment and will have demonstrated proficiency in training and supporting new users in the safe and effective operation of machinery. In addition, the successful candidate will be committed to mentoring students, nurturing student learning both in and out of the laboratory, and discipling students in Jesus Christ.

Duties:
  • Manage the maker space (machine, wood, and prototyping shops), providing instruction to and supervision of students using equipment during scheduled maker space hours (including some evenings and Sunday hours).
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities to students in the safe and effective use of maker-space tools and equipment.
  • Support engineering laboratory and instructional activities including stocking and preparing laboratory components and supplies.
  • Fabrication, assembly, and/or testing of physical experiments, models, test-stands, etc. in collaboration with engineering faculty.
  • Mentor students in the design and prototyping process including both mechanical and electrical control systems, particularly in support of the faculty teaching engineering design laboratories.
  • Schedule and perform routine maintenance on maker space and laboratory equipment.
  • Perform or facilitate repairs on maker space and laboratory equipment.
  • In conjunction with engineering faculty, develop and enforce appropriate safety protocols and relevant training programs for equipment use.
  • Hire and manage student technicians in consultation with the dean.
  • Appropriately integrate Christian faith and biblical principles as reflected in Seventh-day Adventist beliefs in personal interactions with students and colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned by the dean of the School of Engineering and Physics.
Special Requirements: Must have an expressed commitment to Jesus Christ and the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and be an SDA church member in good and regular standing.

Qualifications: Must have appropriate machine shop and prototyping experience. Electrical controls experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline preferred. Prior teaching/mentoring experience and/or relevant industry experience preferred. Be able to write and speak English fluently.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate equipment in a machine shop environment.

Working Conditions: Essential tasks are performed under normal university conditions with little or no noticeable discomfort. Work area is well lighted and ventilated.
