Qualifications: BS/BA degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Practice confidentiality of information at all times. Good people and administrative skills. Previous experience as a residence hall dean is strongly preferred. Has the desire to grow professionally, including a willingness to learn new systems and procedures. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
Special Requirements: Must have an expressed commitment to Jesus Christ, the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, be an SDA church member in good and regular standing, and have a desire to serve in a cooperative, spiritually redemptive, and soul-winning atmosphere.
Physical Demands: This position requires sharp mental skills and emotional balance. The most significant physical demand may be the ability to handle the stress of balancing job responsibilities with the critical decisions affecting students' lives. Another aspect is the high demand for a workweek that can average 60+ hours and often requires work hours well past midnight. Those in the profession must contend with unusually long hours and an on-call schedule that includes nights, weekends, summers, and all holidays. The individual must have high physical stamina and be able to adjust to frequent interruptions from sleep and family time.
Work Environment: The work environmental characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The Assistant/Associate Dean must be willing to live in a facility with 700+ college women, which means that privacy is somewhat limited, frequent interruptions and a high volume of traffic and disruption. The Assistant/Associate Dean is required to live in University-specified housing and thus must be able to handle prescribed daily tasks while accommodating constant interruptions.
An environment that houses 700+ will be more inconvenienced with construction, repairs to basic life-support systems, and environmental factors than most of the campus. For example, a campus department may close for part of the summer to accommodate a building project, but a residence hall committed to providing year-round housing may not. A campus department is not severely inconvenienced by a power outage at night, a water outage, a computer system being down for an upgrade, etc., but a residence hall housing 700+ persons with 700+ individual study and sleep schedules is.
