Deli Assistant Manager - Village Market

Location: Village Market Deli
Hours: Full-Time, Hourly
Pay: $20.21 - $26.52

Job Function:
To effectively assist the deli manager in managing the activities of all deli department personnel; to follow the directives and procedures set by the deli manager; to provide exceptional customer service and hospitality; to achieve the sales and profit goals established for the department; to ensure that the work shift contributes to the financial best interest of the store.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General
  • Observe all store rules and university policies;
  • Check and maintain high standards of food preparation and service;
  • Always adhere to and practice the food safety policies set by the TN Department of Agriculture;
  • Assist the deli manager with the hiring and training of staff, and resolving personnel issues;
  • Have a willing attitude to be ready to assist any deli department/staff when needed with or without notice;
  • Uphold Village Market uniform policies for all deli staff;
  • Assist in motivating, counseling, and disciplining of student employees when necessary;
  • Help deli staff in effective time management and how to manage students with on-the-job training;
  • Assist with purchasing and inventorying necessities that assures quality food service at a minimum cost;
  • Check and maintain deli costs and minimize food waste;
  • Assist with the merchandising and layout of all Deli items for maximum appeal;
  • Help with providing updated prices and weekly menus to the appropriate Village Market department staff;
  • Approve time cards and monitor weekly worked hours of Deli staff and student employees if assigned;
  • Coordinate with the deli manager in being innovative with ideas to implement special food promotions;
  • Maintain all deli equipment in working order and inform upper management of any problems;
  • Perform all other reasonably business-related functions as assigned.
Bookkeeping
  1. Assist the deli manager with performing product gross margin calculations and determining the correct retail pricing to be used on each deli department item based on the department’s financial goals;
  2. Be familiar with invoice documents and confirm accuracy of item description, sizes, quantities and pricing to be used during departmental product deliveries;
  3. Maintain and submit all other required records and reports as assigned.
Merchandising
  1. Keep refrigerated coolers, store shelves and other displays full stocked and faced at all times according to tag allocation, product movement or departmental standards;
  2. Display merchandise in an attractive, appealing, and neat manner;
  3. Keep perishable merchandise rotated in accordance with departmental policy and product code dates and pull all out all out-of-date merchandise;
  4. Follow approved procedures for receiving product, price marking and restocking to ensure quality protection, accuracy and product rotation;
  5. Assist in ordering merchandise and maintain inventory control to minimize out-of-stocks and over stocks;
Maintenance
  1. Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards in compliance with store policy and state and local health regulations on a regular, ongoing basis;
  2. Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance a minimum of one time per shift;
  3. Immediately advise department manager of any maintenance or equipment problems.
Security
  1. Take action to control shrinkage and pilferage losses by being observant of customer and employee actions and behavior, and report to department manager or store management any abnormal behavior;
  2. Protect store assets at all times.
Personnel
  1. Assist in training associates when requested or directed to do so;
  2. Always maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization;
  3. Notify department manager of personnel situations or policy violations.

Requirements and Conditions (Essential Functions)

Education and/or Experience:
  1. A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required; a college degree or experience is preferred;
  2. Minimum 1 year of food service experience is required; personnel and/or department supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Mathematical Skills:
  1. Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, gross margins, markup, percentages, proportions, ratios, volume and to apply concepts of basic algebra;
  2. Ability to verify vendor invoices and credit memos and complete required accounting reports including inventory, receiving and variations in column totals – must be able to input data into a computer using various spreadsheets and software programs.

Language Skills:
  1. Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information of assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with department employees, the store’s co-workers and customers.
  2. Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand:
  • Instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools including a computer
  • Company handbooks, policies and procedures and
  • Other written job-related documents including postings on store bulletin boards.
  1. Ability to compose and write reports and effective departmental memos including “menus”, and customer signs or sales suggestions.

Other Skills or Requirements:
  1. Be able to quickly become fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar, in a timely manner, with the nature and duties of every staff position in the department including procedures, policies and operations;
  2. Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony and safety established at the store.

Physical Requirements:
  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and use hands to handle, finger or feel objects, tools or controls;
  2. The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear and reach with hands and arms, and the employee must crouch or kneel.
  3. The employee must be able to lift up to 50lb with relative ease;
  4. Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including having sufficient visual acuity to check and verify invoices and other written documents;
  5. Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead storage racks and elevated storage areas;
  6. Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust and face shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
  7. Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of glass or plastic containers having liquid contents), employee or customer accidents, etc.;
  8. Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes in refrigerated and frozen storage areas for an extended period of time;
  9. Be able to work with/taste fruits, vegetables, grains, and other agents without negative allergic reactions;
  10. Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common commercial cleaning agents such as bleach and cleaners during routine housekeeping duties;

Work Environment
  1. Includes occasional exposure to low temperatures in refrigerated and frozen storage areas;
  2. Includes occasional exposure to or near heated ovens and high temperatures, as well as humidity from the automatic industrial dishwasher;
  3. The area around the dishwasher frequently has water on the floor;
  4. Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate to fairly noisy due to deli equipment including, but not limited to mixers, fryers, steamers, ovens and the dishwasher.

Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ, the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
