Store Associate (Part-Time) - Village Market

Hours: Part-Time, Hourly
Pay: $18.10 - $24.42

Job Function:
Primary responsibilities include assisting in various departments throughout the store as needed, which may include Bulk, Customer Service, Deli, Grocery, Housekeeping, Produce and Vitamins.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General
  1. Observe and enforce all store rules and university policies;
  2. Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance and adhere to the store’s dress policy;
  3. Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by management;
  4. Be able to multi-task well, especially in fast-paced environments/situations;
  5. Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations throughout the store;
  6. Adhere to each department head’s training in their respective departments;
  7. Professionally handle customer complaints and provide them with excellent service;
  8. Ensure favorable store image to customers by maintaining a clean, attractive and friendly store;
  9. Maintain good communications with all store employees;
  10. Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service;
  11. Effectively and efficiently run a cash register when assigned after sufficient training;
  12. This position requires being able to effectively switch to and work in different departments as needed or assigned, and perform various general duties and assignments as directed.
Merchandising
  1. As needed with each department, assist with the stocking, fronting and blocking to ensure refrigerated and frozen coolers, store shelves and other displays are fully stocked and faced at all times according to department standards;
  2. Keep merchandise rotated in accordance with store policy and product code dates, and to pull all expired merchandise, and to inform and/or assist the other department heads of any situations within their respective departments that need attention;
  3. Follow set procedures for receiving product, price marking and restocking;

Maintenance and Safety
  1. Assist with housekeeping tasks as assigned to maintain cleanliness in all areas (sales floor, deli, backstock and receiving, front offices, restrooms, foyer, front of store, sidewalks & eating areas);
  2. Follow protocols to emergencies or potential safety hazards such as spills, broken glass or plastic containers that contain liquid products;
  3. Keep watch for failures in refrigeration equipment during regularly assigned tasks;
  4. Ensure that all equipment used in the department is maintained in good working order.
Security
  1. Ensure that receiving policies and procedures are complied with to protect store assets;
  2. Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer actions and behavior;
  3. Notify management or security and call attention to any abnormal behavior noted;
  4. Maintain effective security standards and procedures for all areas within the store.
Requirements and Conditions (Essential Functions):

Education and/or Experience:
  1. High school experience is required – a diploma or GED equivalent is preferred;
  2. Retail and/or food service experience strongly preferred.
Mathematical Skills:
  1. Must possess the math skills necessary to verify vendor invoice charges and counts;
Language Skills:
  1. Ability to hear, speak, and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones and to be able to communicate effectively with customers, department employees, the store’s co-workers, visitors and sales representatives;
  2. Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to:
  1. read and understand company handbooks, policies and procedures;
  2. be able to compose and write information notices or bulletins to staff;
  3. read and understand other written job-related documents including postings on company bulletin boards;
  1. Ability to compose and write reports and business correspondence including effective departmental memos, employee corrective action notices and postings.
Reasoning Ability:
  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist;
  2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule or written form.
Other Skills or Requirements:
  1. Must be able to quickly learn/follow the operations and nature of assigned departmental duties;
  2. Must be able to learn and run a cash register efficiently and effectively;
  3. Must have a working knowledge of effectively using Windows-based computers and basic applications (internet browsers, Word, Excel, Outlook etc.);
  4. While not expected to supervise student employees, be able to set a strong example in regards to customer service, customer hospitality, and good work ethic.
Physical Requirements:
  1. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50lbs with relative ease;
  2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and use the hands to handle, feel objects, tools or controls;
  3. The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear, and reach with the hands and arms and occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel;
  4. Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including sufficient visual acuity to check accounting reports, invoices, contracts and other written documents;
  5. Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items for customers located above freezer cases or from stockrooms and other storage areas;
  6. Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of containers having liquid contents), shoplifting and other security assistance requests, customer accidents, etc;
  7. Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for volume, productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony, safety and profitability established by the employer.

Work Environment:
  1. The work environment includes occasional exposure to, in or around refrigerated and freezer storage areas, as well as higher temperature and humid areas, such as in the deli, and areas where a wet floor is common, such as around the automatic industrial dishwasher;
  2. Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate, however, on occasion, it can be somewhat noisy when power tools, deli equipment, or facility equipment are in use;
  3. Access to break areas, storage areas, offices and employee restrooms requires ascending and descending a flight of stairs.

Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ; the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
