Produce Associate (Part-Time) - Village Market

Job Function:
To maintain and operate the Produce Department in an efficient manner within company policy; to ensure that the work shift contributes to the financial best interests of the store.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General
  1. Observe all store rules and university policies;
  2. Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times adhering to the store dress code;
  3. Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by the department manager;
  4. Comply with all local, state and federal health codes, and weights/measures laws and labeling requirements;
  5. Comply with all safety policies and procedures;
  6. Take products to preparation or storage area including refrigerated and frozen storage areas;
  7. Keep manager aware of low inventory conditions or spoilage problems;
  8. Handle and assist controlling damaged and spoiled products according to store policy;
  9. Follow approved procedures for receiving product, price marking and stocking;
  10. Wait on customers including slicing, cutting, weighing, packaging and pricing merchandise;
  11. Assist in the preparation of food products;
  12. Assist in training and supervising students when assigned;                  
  13. Maintain good communications with superiors and subordinates throughout the store;
  14. Ensure favorable department image to customers by maintaining a clean, attractive and friendly department;
  15. Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance;
  16. Be willing and able to cover as needed when the produce manager is away, and be responsible for placing and receiving orders in manager’s absence;
  17. Assist with department inventory as needed/assigned;
  18. Perform other duties and assignments as directed;
Bookkeeping
  1. Use correct pricing as determined by department manager;
  2. Maintain and submit all required records and reports including tracking and spoilage sheets.
Merchandising
  1. Maintain and promote items including new items and weekly specials;
  2. Keep refrigerated coolers, store shelves and other displays full stocked and faced at all times according to tag allocation, product movement or departmental standards;
  3. Display merchandise in an attractive, appealing, neat and colorful manner;
  4. Keep perishable merchandise rotated in accordance with departmental policy and product code dates and pull all out all out-of-date merchandise;
  5. Maintain a procedure for making regularly scheduled inspections of display racks and refrigerated cases to ensure product freshness and visual appeal;
  6. Follow approved procedures for receiving product, price marking and restocking to ensure quality protection, accuracy and product rotation;
  7. Keep manager or other designated personnel aware of low inventory conditions or spoilage problems;
  8. Be responsible for closing down or opening the produce department when scheduled.
Maintenance
  1. Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards in compliance with store policy and state and local health regulations on a regular, ongoing basis,
  2. Assist in keeping all food preparation, display and storage areas clean, clear and in good order;
  3. Respond promptly to emergencies or potential safety hazards;
  4. Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance a minimum of one time per shift; use and maintain equipment in good working order;
  5. Immediately advise department manager of any maintenance or equipment problems.
Security
  1. Take action to control shrinkage and pilferage losses;
  2. Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer and employee actions and behavior – report to management any abnormal behavior;
  3. Protect store assets at all times.
Personnel
  1. Assist in training student employees when requested or directed to do so;
  2. Maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization;
  3. Notify department manager of personnel situations or policy violations;

Requirements and Conditions (Essential Functions)

Education and/or Experience:
  1. Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent; college experience preferred.
  2. Retail and department experience preferred, but not required.

Mathematical Skills:
  1. Must be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eight-grade level in order to handle basic transactions and measuring and weighing procedures.

Language Skills:
  1. Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand:
  1. Instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools including a computer
  2. Company handbooks, policies and procedures and
  3. Other written job-related documents including postings on store bulletin boards.

Other Skills or Requirements:
  1. In a timely manner, become thoroughly familiar with all products carried in the department;
  2. Be able to handle special request from customers accurately;
  3. Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner.
Physical Requirements:
  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to handle, finger or feel objects, tools or controls;
  2. The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear and reach with hands and arms, occasionally; the employee must crouch or kneel.
  3. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with relative ease;
  4. Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including having sufficient visual acuity to check and verify invoices and other written documents;
  5. Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead storage racks and elevated storage areas;
  6. Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust and face shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
  7. Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes in refrigerated storage areas;
  8. Be able to work with fresh fruits, vegetables and other agents without negative allergic consequences;
  9. Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common commercial cleaning agents such as bleach and cleaners during routine housekeeping duties;
  10. Have sufficient memory retention skills to memorize daily menu items and specials, customer orders, etc.

Work Environment:
  1. The work environment includes occasional exposure to, in or around refrigerated storage areas and relatively damp and humid conditions;
  2. Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate, however, on occasion, it can be somewhat noisy when power tools and equipment are in use or when duties require a temporary presence in the compressor area;
  3. Access to break areas, storage areas, offices and employee restrooms requires ascending and descending a flight of stairs.
Special Requirement:
Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ, the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
