Job Function:
To operate a cash register and check stand to provide customers with the most accurate and efficient checkout service possible; to perform stocking and other duties as assigned; to provide and maintain high standards of customer service in the store’s front-end operations, to perform other customer service duties such as handling customer questions and concerns; to ensure that the work shift contributes to the financial best interest of the store.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
General
- Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe all store rules and university policies, including dress regulations;
- Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by the department supervisor;
- Clean checkout areas daily and keep them neat and organized;
- Be knowledgeable in and able to recognize or differentiate between all the various types of produce merchandise carried in the store, including differences between varieties of similar classes of products (e.g., apples, lettuce, etc.);
- Assist customers with any large or bulky products that they may have difficulty handling;
- Record the purchases of a customer into a cash register efficiently and accurately;
- Process all of the various types of sales transactions accepted by the store, including but not limited to cash, checks, authorized charge cards, EFT transactions, EBT or Food Stamps, and collect those receipts in strict accordance with established company policies and procedures;
- Process all refunds and returns according to company policy;
- Bag or package merchandise according to established company policies and procedures,
- Stock merchandise in assigned sections as required;
- Handle damaged or spoiled products and return-to-stocks according to company policy;
- Perform all front-end duties according to company policies, procedures, and practices;
- Greet all customers with a smile and provide them with prompt and courteous service;
- Perform other duties and assignments as directed;
Bookkeeping
- Ring all sales into the cash register in accordance with company cash handling procedures;
- Use correct pricing and department for all merchandise, and notify management of any
price discrepancies;
- Notify management of any irregularities or discrepancies in the results of the work shift for cash variances exceeding the established amounts.
Maintenance
- Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards on an ongoing basis;
- Assist in keeping check-out, sales, storage areas clean and clear, and in good order;
- Use and maintain equipment in good working order and report problems or malfunctions immediately to your supervisor.
Security
- Adhere to store policy pertaining to excessive cash in registers and request cash pickups in accordance with such policy;
- Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer actions and behavior; report to management or campus safety any abnormal behavior;
- Secure register at all times when leaving it unattended; protect company assets at all times.
Personnel
- Assist in training associates and co-workers when directed to do so;
- Maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization;
- Notify the department manager of situations or policy violations having an adverse effect on store operating performance.

Education and/or Experience:
- A high school education is preferred;
- Prior cashiering experience is a plus, but we will train where needed.
Mathematical Skills:
- Be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and percentages, and apply basic concepts of algebra in order to handle sales transactions, tender change, and verify charges and counts;
- Be able to accurately complete required reports, including sales reports and cash accountability or cash reconciliation.
Language Skills:
- Ability to hear, speak, and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with department employees, the store’s co-workers, and customers;
- Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency to:
- read and understand instructions for operating cash registers and other equipment;
- read and understand company handbooks, policies, and procedures;
- be able to instruct, train, and communicate effectively with employees;
- be able to communicate effectively with customers, visitors, and sales representatives;
- read and understand other written job-related documents, including postings or company bulletin boards;
- Ability to fill out forms properly and write reports.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist;
- Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule, or written form.
Other Skills or Requirements
- Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with the types of merchandise carried in the store, including pricing and family product differences in produce (e.g., apples and squashes) and departmental product differences such as deli, grocery, bulk foods, etc.;
- Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony, and safety established in the store.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, to sit, use the hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls;
- The employee must frequently walk, talk, or hear, and reach with the hands and arms, and occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel;
- The employee must occasionally lift or carry 35 pounds, carrying bulk or industrial-sized containers of product, and frequently exert or lift moderate amounts of weight;
- Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus, including sufficient visual acuity to check accounting reports, invoices, contracts, and other written or printed documents;
- Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust and face shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
- Be able to stock refrigerated coolers and freezers;
- Be able to work with fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants and flowers, and other types of typical grocery items without negative allergic consequences that adversely impact work performance;
- Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemicals from common cleaning agents used during routine housekeeping duties;
- Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of containers having liquid contents), shoplifting and other security assistance requests, customer accidents, etc.;
- Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for volume, productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony, safety, and profitability established by the employer;
Work Environment
The work environment conditions described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. It may be possible to modify some circumstances to accommodate individuals with disabilities;
- The work environment includes occasional exposure to refrigerated and frozen storage areas;
- Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate;
- Access to break areas, storage areas, offices, and employee restrooms may require ascending and descending a flight of stairs.
