Vitamin Associate - Village Market

Job Function:
To maintain and operate the Vitamin Department in an efficient manner within company policy; to ensure that the work shift contributes to the financial best interests of the store.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. General
    • Observe all store rules and university policies;
    • Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe university dress regulations, i.e. no jewelry, no revealing clothing; At times must wear an approved hat or hair net;
    • Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by the department manager;
    • Comply with all local, state and federal health and civil code regulations;
    • Comply with all state, county and local weights and measures laws and labeling requirements;
    • Adhere to merchandising plan and goals established for the department;
    • Follow approved procedures for receiving product, price marking and stocking to ensure quality protection, accuracy and product rotation;
    • Take products to preparation or storage area including refrigerated and freezer storage areas;
    • Handle damaged and spoiled products according to store policy and assist on controlling the level of damaged and spoiled product;
    • Comply with all safety policies and procedures;
    • Wait on customers including assisting with product selection;
    • Assist in training associates when assigned;
    • Maintain good communications with superiors and subordinates throughout the store;
    • Perform other duties and assignments as directed;
    • Ensure favorable department image to customers by maintaining a clean, attractive and friendly department;
    • Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance.
  2. Bookkeeping
    • Use correct pricing as determined by department manager;
    • Be familiar with invoice documents and confirm accuracy of item description, sizes, quantities and pricing to be used during departmental product deliveries;
  3. Merchandising
    • Maintain and promote items including new items and weekly specials;
    • Keep refrigerated coolers, store shelves and other displays full stocked and faced at all times according to tag allocation, product movement or departmental standards;
    • Display merchandise in an attractive, appealing, neat and colorful manner;
    • Keep perishable merchandise rotated in accordance with departmental policy and product code dates and pull all out all out-of-date merchandise;
    • Follow approved procedures for receiving product, price marking and restocking to ensure quality protection, accuracy and product rotation;
    • Keep manager or other designated personnel aware of low inventory conditions or spoilage problems.
  4. Maintenance
    • Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards in compliance with store policy and state and local health regulations on a regular, ongoing basis,
    • Assist in keeping all display and storage areas clean, clear and in good order;
    • Respond promptly to emergencies or potential safety hazards;
    • Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance a minimum of one time per shift; use and maintain equipment in good working order;
    • Immediately advise department manager of any maintenance or equipment problems.
  5. Security
    • Take action to control shrinkage and pilferage losses; observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer and employee actions and behavior; report to department manager or store manager any abnormal behavior;
    • Protect store assets at all times.
  6. Personnel
    • Assist in training associates when requested or directed to do so;
    • Maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization;
    • Notify department manager of personnel situations or policy violations having as adverse effect on store operating performance or of situations requiring disciplinary action or that may potentially require such action.
Requirements and Conditions (Essential Functions)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform all of the duties described in the proceeding in an efficient and competent manner.   • Education and/or Experience: High school education is preferred but not required. Knowledge of vitamins, supplements, herbs and natural remedies is required.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None Required
  • Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eight-grade level in order to handle basic transactions and measuring and weighing procedures.
Language Skills: Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information of assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with department employees, the store’s co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand:
  • Instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools including a computer
  • Company handbooks, policies and procedures and
  • Other written job-related documents including postings on store bulletin boards.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule or written form.

Other Skills or Requirements:
  • Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with all products carried in the department;
  • Be able to handle special request from customers accurately;
  • Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in a efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony and safety established at the store.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; and use hands to handle objects, tools or controls;
  • The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear and reach with hands and arms, occasionally; the employee must crouch or kneel.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 35 pounds at least once per shift carrying received merchandise, and frequently lift negligible (less than 25 pounds) amounts of weight.
  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including having sufficient visual acuity to check and verify invoices and other written documents;
  • Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead storage racks and elevated storage areas;
  • Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust and face shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin;
  • Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of glass or plastic containers having liquid contents), employee or customer accidents, etc.;
  • Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working in refrigerated storage areas up to 20 minutes at a time;
  • Be able to work with dried herbs or spices and other agents without negative allergic consequences;
  • Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common commercial cleaning agents such as bleach and cleaners during routine housekeeping duties;
  • Have sufficient memory retention skills to memorize daily menu items and specials, customer orders, etc.

  • The work environment includes occasional exposure to low temperatures in refrigerated storage areas;
  • Typically the noise level in the work environment is moderate.
